David Wright Pulls The Hidden Ball Trick… Sort Of

In addition to hitting a 3-run homer early in yesterday’s Mets-Padres game, David Wright helped the Mets win with one of the most creative defensive plays we’ve seen in a long time. There were two outs and the speedy Cameron Maybin on second when Wright made a diving stop behind the third base bag. Instead of throwing across the diamond to first, Wright faked the throw and ran at Maybin who was rounding third. He tagged him just a Cameron figured out what was going on. After the game, Wright said he was concerned that he wouldn’t get the runner at first and that Maybin would almost certainly score on the throw. I have to say, this is one of the most heads up defensive plays I’ve ever seen. It almost has t be seen to be believed.
