No Hit Bids: Some guy named Josh Johnson was threatening the lowly Mets on Opening Day with a no hitter. No hit (and only one walk) through 6… I turned on the game. Next thing I know, Willie Harris singles up the middle and my interest in the game completely falls. Who wants to watch the Mets anyway? (I’m starting to sound like Max) Also, the Orioles had a no hit bid going into the 7th, so I turned it on. Chris Tillman had given way to Jeremy Accardo–stupid pitch counts– and Accordo promptly got two quick outs. Then B.J. Upton pokes a single into center. Interest severely diminished. Aside: BJ Upton does alot of things well: runs, hits for power, plays strong defense, plays center field but, he struggles with taking out the catcher. After he broke up the no hitter, and stole second, Upton was thrown out at the plate and looked bad in his attempt to take out the catcher. He’s soft….
Vin Scully: I watched the beginning of the Dodgers-Giants game (Friday night) with the great Vin Scully calling the game. Anytime I hear his voice, I feel like I’m watching history happen. Something for the ages will soon be called by his smooth voice and eternal professionalism. Scully’s tidbits and personal stories go unrivaled throughout the sports world. I learned cool stuff about every hitter during Scully’s broadcast and his mastery of the one man play by play and color commentary is baffling. If there were 29 more Vin Scully’s, baseball would be a far far more popular sport.
Chickens: The other Off The Bench blog, some idiots sponsored by NBCSports, reported a story that really made me laugh. Apparently, two high school baseball players in Texas

stole and killed two baby chickens. The act is believed to be a sacrifice to help improve their playing skills. The two kids have been formally charged with animal cruelty and within the police report it actually says, “It appears that superstition relating to a slump in baseball performance could have played a part.” This is awesome. These kids are awesome. I should buy them a steak dinner. For the record, the kids’ high school- Western Hills High School- has gone 2-1 since the incident. Its believed that these two young men have been dismissed from the team, an act likely to get PETA out of the parking lot with their pro animal signs. Too bad, because they were just following the trend set by Pedro Cerrano in the classic film Major League.
