Buster Posey has a broken ankle and possible ligament damage and a knee injury. That depresses me. I hate when guys go down like this, I love watching them play and baseball is worse without them. I was so upset when Stephen Strasburg got hurt. Yes, there is debate over whether or not collisions at home should be part of the game but I don’t really want to get into that or think about that right now. Instead, lets look at something more fun.
Last night featured a 5-4 victory by the Phillies over the Reds in 19 innings. Now, ESPN guys like Jayson Stark will go off and tell you the historical significance of this or that but here at Off the Bench, we’ve decided to take a simpler approach (no, its not because we don’t have research department like ESPN, shut up). Here are some cool things from the box score of last nights game:
- The Reds used 20 players out of 25 on their roster, the Phillies used 21.
- Carlos Ruiz caught 18 innings and played 3B for 1
- 12 players had at least 6 ABs in the game
- 3 players who didn’t start the game had 4 ABs
- Scott Rolen went 0-7 with a walk
- Drew Stubbs, the leadoff hitter for Cincy, went 2-9 and saw 50 pitches by himself
- The Reds struck out 16 times
- Raul Ibanez went 1-8 before driving in the winning run
- Carlos Fisher threw 95 pitches in relief
- 2 relief pitchers (Fisher and Danys Baez) threw 5 or more innings
- Neither team scored between the 10th and the 19th. And finally…
- Wilson Valdez started the game at 2B, got 3 hits, made 1 error, and then got the win on the mound. I hope he called his mom.
