Is there a better fit in the a major leagues for Mike Cameron than Cleveland? The Indians are a struggling team but are still only a half a game out of first place in the AL Central. Their star right-fielder, Shin-Soo Choo, is out up to two months with a broken thumb which means that Michael Brantley is the starter. Though Brantley has done a capable job Cameron, a 38 year old veteran who could bring come valuable experience to the Cleveland clubhouse and was nearly universally liked by his Boston teammates, would fit in very nicely in the Indians lineup. Cleveland needs a right-handed hitter and Cameron fits that bill too. Watch for the Indians to make an offer for Cameron as soon as he becomes available.
The question begs then, if Mike Cameron’s compatibility the Cleveland Indians is so obvious, why didn’t the Boston Red Sox try to trade him before designating him for assignment. When a team designates a player, it has 10 days to trade, release, or demote him. In Cameron’s case, we’re really only dealing with the former two choices. By designating Cameron, Boston killed any leverage it had for a deal because the Indians can now just wait out the clock for him to become a free agent and scoop him up for nothing in return.
As I write this I realize how much of it is conjecture. The Red Sox may very well have tried to shop Cameron before making this move. I really don’t know. I know this post is kind of weak but I kind of had trouble with coming up with something to write about today. I think I’ll do something about wether or not the Yankees are better off with or with out Derek Jeter which incorporates statistics before Jeter returns to the field Monday. I just didn’t feel like writing that today.
