World Series 2012: San Francisco Giants host the Detroit Tigers. Let’s get it on!
UPDATE: Good morning folks. A cursory reading of the headlines informs me that I was correct: Marco Scutaro indeed took home MVP honors from the NLCS. And it was well deserved. The oldest Giant without a trip to the World Series, Scutaro went an absurd 14 for 28 in the precursor, and it seemed as if all his hits were clutch.
In the bottom of the first, Angel Pagan led off with a sharp single and then he and Scutaro executed a textbook hit and run to set up first and third, and the eventual winning run.
But it wasn’t all offensive from the second baseman. He played stellar defense the whole series, going errorless in 28 chances. Amongst those 28 opportunities, there were a few Web Gems to be sure, but none was more dramatic than chance number 28. As the game wore into the ninth inning, a driving rain gathering force, Scutaro was captured on the super-slow camera, arms agape, smiling at the sky. Fittingly (as seems to be the trend with this Giants team), the out that sent them to the World Series found its way into the soaking wet glove of the second baseman. In such a rain, the play was far from easy, and Scutaro was visibly battling to keep track of it.
But, after being down three games to one, in St. Louis, a little rain was not going to spoil the San Fran fun. In fact, after Scutaro squeezed the 27th out, the rain just made for a better party.
This is going to be a very good World Series.
