I was fortunate to attended the Yankees-Royals game on June 6th in Kansas City, Missouri this weekend. It was my first trip to KCMO and to Kauffman Stadium and I was really impressed. The stadium had some really cool features–such as the Royals Hall of Fame and the crown cut into the outfield grass and the giant crown-topped scoreboard was amazing–and the city was even better, with multiple areas featuring an awesome assortment of bars, restaurants and the like. I definitely want to go back.
While in KC, I made sure to hit the top BBQ places. After reading a number of complimentary reviews, I got to Oklahoma Joe’s, supposedly the best spot of them all. After getting there 30 minutes before it opened and waiting 40 minutes in line, I have to say it didn’t disappoint. The 3 hour line out the door by the time I left was well worth it for all those who didn’t plan as well as I.
One thing that was kind of upsetting was the prevalence of Yankee fans in the stadium and the city. Of course, I expected there to be a few fans for the game’s most popular team and I attended in my Mantle jersey and NY hat, but I didn’t expect to be so well received… About 40% of the stadium was in Yankees’ gear and I even received a compliment on my jersey….. from a ballpark attendant! The worst part? The Royals WERE SELLING YANKEE STUFF IN THEIR TEAM STORE. It’s the single most egregious sin I’ve ever seen at a baseball stadium. How can you sell shirts, pennants, hats, and foam fingers of the opposing team in your team store? I understand why there were so many fans in Yankee gear, but they shouldn’t be able to buy it at the Royals’ house. They don’t sell Dodgers’ stuff at Yankee Stadium, I assure you.
Anyway, aside from some treasonous Royals team store managers, the trip was great. I really liked the K and would take any opportunity to go back. Have a look. (Click Photos to enlarge)
