Down on the Farm with Brennen Davis
I was able to meet up and interview Brennen Davis, drafted in the 2nd Round by the Chicago Cubs in 2018. He is considered to be one of the Cubs best prospects, coming in at #3 according to Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. Davis made his full season debut this year.
Heading into spring training the Cubs felt that they would probably start him at short season Eugene because he figured to be somewhat raw – a prep basketball star in high school helping his team to win a state championship, professional ball will be his first time with a full focus on baseball. However, Davis did well enough in spring training to earn a chance to play in the Midwest League. He has proven the Cubs wise in granting that promotion, hitting .298 and slugging .509 over 48 games. Davis is considered to be a five tool player, as he gets above average grades for his hitting, power, speed, arm, and fielding.
Davis was injured when the Cubs came through my area, so I was unable to watch him play, but when he returned from the injured list on July 29th he homered in his first two games. Davis will definitely be an exciting prospect for Cubs fans to follow over the next few years and has a great chance to be a future top 100 prospect.
James Weisser: Who is one of your favorite players to watch?
Brennen Davis: I would have to say it’s Lorenzo Cain. I really enjoy the way he plays the game, I like his energy and the way he plays on the field.
JW: Who do you try to model your game after?
BD: I would say Lorenzo Cain again, he’s such a good defender and he can hit. I first started watching him and paying attention to him when he was with Kansas City. For me defense comes first because it’s something you can control.
JW: What’s your favorite thing about the game of baseball?
BD: I love the team aspect of it. I like it how we get to pick one another up. I used to play basketball too, so I mean it’s a lot different as in the fact that one player can’t take over the entire game, it takes a whole team to come out with a win.
JW: What got you interested in the game of baseball?
BD: My mom, she wanted me to try everything. So I played a lot of different sports, Baseball and Basketball stuck.
JW: What inspires you to do your best?
BD: My personal goals are pretty high, I not only want to make myself proud but I also would like to make my mom proud. I appreciate all the sacrifices she made to help me get to this point.
JW: What’s your favorite thing about the Cubs organization?
BD: I love the fan base, they’re an awesome organization to play for. We draft quality guys; a lot of good guys within our organization. I like how our coaches are guys we can talk to about almost anything outside of baseball.
JW: What’s one part of your game that you take pride in?
BD: I know most people should take pride in their defense but I really take pride in my work ethic which helps prepare me to have the success I have in the games.
JW: What’s your favorite movie?
BD: I’m gonna sound like a nerd but I’m a big fan of the Matrix movies, and I also love Marvel and DC.
JW: If you could be any superhero or have any superpower what would it be?
BD: I would probably say Iron Man, I know he’s not really a superhero but I like his brains with the suit it’s pretty cool.
JW: What’s one of the ways you’re using baseball to help others?
BD: I look at baseball as a platform to make a difference to help others, and so if I’m fortunate enough, I’m definitely going to give back, I’m like all in 100% going to give back through charity events and things like that. I’m sure I will get more opportunities to do more things like that as I move up and so currently I help out with some of the opportunities that the Cubs provide us with like volunteering at the children’s hospital, and when I was in the Dominican Republic we helped provide little league kids with equipment. Moving forward I would someday like to have my own charity where I’m helping kids and having an impact on their lives.
JW: What’s one of your favorite foods?
BD: I like the classics like pizza, hot dogs, ribs, and more, nothing too crazy but.
JW: What’s your favorite kind of music?
BD: I’m a big hip hop guy right now. I like rap or something with a good beat. I’m not really a one kind of genre type of guy so I’m not really that into country but if it has a good beat I’d probably like it.
