Down On The Farm With Connor Scott
Connor Scott was drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft, with the 13th overall pick by the Miami Marlins out of H.B. Plant High School in Tampa, Florida – the same high school as Hall of Famer Wade Boggs. This year he has had to make some adjustments throughout his first full season, like getting used to hitting in the cold and getting used to playing almost everyday.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Connor and hear first hand about those adjustments, and his outlook overall.
James Weisser: Who did you like to watch play when you were growing up?
Connor Scott: Growing up I would probably have to say Derek Jeter and Christian Yelich. I really liked how they were good both on and off the field. They were not only great on the field but I really have a lot of respect for how they were off the field and how they were able to lead their teams.
JW: What’s your favorite thing about the game of baseball?
CS: I just love how it allows me to take my mind off of things. I love the feeling I get when I’m tying up my cleats and going out there, it’s such a special opportunity to be able to play this game. It’s a lot of fun playing everyday.
JW: What got you interested in the game of baseball?
CS: I fell in love with ever since I was little and playing tee ball. I played almost every sport growing up and baseball stuck with me the best.
JW: What inspires you to do your best?
CS: My family. Baseball gives you such great opportunities financially and as a person it helps you grow. You know you have to go through some tough times but just being able to support my family if they need anything and being able to give them nice things because they helped me to grow up good.
JW: How are you using baseball to help others?
CS: There are two ways that I’m using baseball to help others. One is that I try to set a good example for young players and kids that come and watch me play. The second is I’m doing some things to help first responders by donating to them and I haven’t really had a chance to interact with it that much but there is definitely some things were trying to do to help first responders.
JW: What’s one of the things your working on improving?
CS: I’m working on getting stronger and filling out more of my body.
JW: What’s one aspect of your game that you take pride in?
CS: The biggest thing I take pride in is playing my butt off on the field, leaving it all out on the field. Whether it’s laying out for balls or stealing bags, I try to push the limits out there or wherever it may be, that’s the biggest part of my game I take pride in.
JW: What’s your favorite movie?
CS: I think the other guys is my favorite movie.
JW: What’s your favorite food?
CS: Steak.
JW: What’s your favorite kind of music?
CS: Country.
JW: What do you like to do outside of baseball?
CS: I like hunting and fishing.
JW: If you could have any superhero power what would it be?
CS: I’d probably choose super strength. I think it would be fun especially when it came to hitting home runs.
